The Indigenous Chamber of Commerce (ICC) is proud to announce the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Council (MASRC) as the Charity of Honour for this year’s Moonlit Masquerade Gala on October 21.

For over four decades, the MASRC has been at the forefront of empowering Indigenous communities through sport and recreational programming. Its mission is simple yet profound, to strengthen Indigenous participation in healthy-lifestyle activities while advancing reconciliation through action.

MASRC operates as a provincial hub for Indigenous sport and recreation development, connecting athletes from various communities across Manitoba. It works with both urban and rural populations to increase access to physical activity, coaching, and leadership opportunities.

Empowering Communities Through Sport and Wellness

From “Learn to Swim” programs to community fitness initiatives, sport camps, and self-defence classes, the MASRC ensures that Indigenous youth and families engage in wellness on their own terms and within their own cultural contexts.

Beyond programming, the MASRC also leads efforts to celebrate and preserve Indigenous excellence in sport. Its Manitoba Indigenous Sports Hall of Fame, a virtual museum, honours athletes who have shaped Manitoba’s sporting history. Through this platform, stories of perseverance and achievement are brought to life, inspiring younger generations to pursue their own paths in sport and leadership.

MASRC’s work also aligns closely with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, particularly those related to sport and recreation. By promoting inclusive access and integrating Indigenous knowledge into sport systems, the organization contributes to a broader movement of empowerment and self-determination, particularly among the youth.

Preserving Excellence and Advancing Reconciliation

Being recognized as the charity of honour at the Indigenous Chamber Gala is a reflection of the MASRC’s vital role in building healthy and connected communities. Funds raised through the event will help the Council expand its reach to support youth programs, train Indigenous coaches, and ensure that sport continues to serve as a bridge between cultures and generations.
