Every year on September 30, we commemorate Orange Shirt Day to reflect upon the history and legacy of colonialism in this country but also as a commitment to truth and reconciliation moving forward. In commemoration, wearing an orange shirt has become a powerful symbol of remembrance for the children who were forcibly taken to residential schools and a pledge to ensure that every child matters.
For this act of solidarity to carry its full meaning, it is of utmost importance that supporters carefully consider where their orange shirt comes from. Many large retailers now sell orange shirts however many of the proceeds fail to benefit Indigenous peoples and their communities.
By purchasing from an Indigenous-owned business or organization, supporters can ensure that their purchase translates into tangible impact where proceeds will help benefit Indigenous people, entrepreneurs, and their communities.
At the Indigenous Chamber of Commerce (ICC), we strongly recommend the following:
- Buy from Indigenous makers and organizations. Look for shirts sold by local Friendship Centres, Indigenous artists, or community-led initiatives where proceeds are used to fund Indigenous communities. Consider one of our member organizations specializing in clothing and apparel such as Red Rebel Armour.
- Think beyond one day. An orange shirt is a starting point, but it can also open the door to further support; whether by attending Indigenous cultural events, shopping from Indigenous businesses year-round, or learning about reconciliation efforts in your community.Â
This September 30, the Indigenous Chamber of Commerce
will proudly wear its orange shirts and continue its mission
of building a better society for Indigenous entrepreneurs
and communities across the country.
